According to him, State Police would empower states to recruit qualified youths who possess a deep understanding of their local environment, culture, language, and terrain, thereby enhancing intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and rapid response to security threats.
“Every crime and insecurity challenge is essentially local. State Police will enable states to complement federal security efforts by deploying personnel who understand their communities and can respond swiftly to emerging threats.”
Hon. Laori further emphasized that State Police would strengthen early warning and early response mechanisms, improve community-based policing, and enable states to invest more directly in the protection of lives and property.
He also observed that the proposal aligns with security practices in many advanced democracies, where policing responsibilities are shared among different levels of government to enhance effectiveness, accountability, and responsiveness.
While supporting the initiative, the lawmaker stressed the need for adequate constitutional safeguards, professional standards, and oversight mechanisms to prevent abuse and ensure accountability.
Describing the proposal as a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria's federal structure, Hon. Laori reiterated that the security and welfare of citizens remain the primary responsibility of government as provided under Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution.
He assured Nigerians of his continued support for legislative measures that promote public safety, national development, and improved living conditions, while urging stakeholders to engage constructively to ensure the successful implementation of a State Police system that serves the interests of all Nigerians.
